Verla Jean Ensign, aged 90, peacefully passed away on October 2, 2023, in Lansing, Michigan. She was born in Lansing on September 10, 1933, to loving parents Earl and Ione Snyder. Verla was the eldest child and cherished her role as the big sister.
Verla found great joy in her career, dedicating herself to education. She worked at MSU in the College of Education and also contributed her talents to the Okemos school system. Her passion for learning extended beyond her work as she was actively involved in various activities and organizations in Mason, Michigan, contributing to her community in meaningful ways.
Verla's civic-minded spirit was matched only by her love for her church and sporting events her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated in. She was a devoted family woman who treasured holidays spent with her loved ones.
Among her most cherished memories were the winter trips to Florida with her beloved husband, Charlie. These adventures created lasting bonds and beautiful moments that she held dear.
Verla was predeceased by her husbands, Ray M. Cochrane in 2006 and Charles V. Ensign in 2010, as well as her sisters, Alice Belen in 2022 and Martha Pouland in 2018. She is survived by her children, Chris and Nadia Cochrane, Lisa and Mike Sotomayor, Becky and Len Bowen, Sandra and Quinton Whitmire, stepdaughters, Deborah Pennington (Eddie), Doreen Olko (Robert), and Diane Hart (Mark). Verla also leaves behind a legacy of love through her many adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her cherished sister, Maxine Bazzy.
Verla Jean Ensign's unwavering love, zest for life, and dedication to her family and community will forever be remembered and cherished. She leaves behind a beautiful tapestry of memories that will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate to know her.
