Shirley Dockendorf, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother peacefully passed away on February 8 with her entire family by her side. She was a determined and courageous woman who overcame many years and bouts of cancer.
Shirley was born in Everett, Washington on Leap year, February 29, 1932. She was raised in Marysville, graduating from Marysville High School in 1950. Shirley was married to the love of her life, Fred Dockendorf in 1952. After working for the Texaco company, Fred and Shirley relocated to Coronado, California while Fred served in the military. While living in California, away from family and friends, she began her avid obsession with Husky football. She was one of the most knowledgeable fans in the northwest and a season ticket holder for over 25 years. They moved back to Marysville where their first child, Gayle was born in 1954. Her second child, Fredrick Jr., was stillborn in 1956. In 1957 David was born followed by Carol in 1959 and finally Paul in 1962.
During the years of raising her family, she was active in schools (working for Marysville School District for 28 years), community sports and always present for her children. Shirley and Fred had a large circle of close friends where they enjoyed socializing, playing cards and sharing good times. Shirley loved traveling to Hawaii with family and friends, and she and Fred loved taking cruises. She had a passion for fishing both locally and at Sekiu and Westport. She also was an excellent clam digger and loved crabbing. Being an excellent cook, Shirley excelled in making the best potato salad, blackberry pie and chocolate fudge cake. In addition to cooking she loved reading, knitting and making afghans for family members and newly born grandchildren.
Shirley was an active member of S. Mary's Catholic church serving many committees.
In 1978, Shirley's amazing grand children began to be born. She had seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 65 years, Fred and their four children, Gayle, David, Carol and Paul (Ellen). Shirley was very proud to be the grandmother of seven amazing grandchildren, Brooke (Ernie), Christina (Marshall), Lindsay(Tom), Mario (Linzi), Christopher, Cody and Cameron and twelve wonderful great grandchildren.
