He was born on September 12, 1933, in Dallas, PA, to James and Catherine Gansel. As a young man, he joined the US Air Force and then married the love of his life, Betty Lou (Dymond), on June 12, 1957. God blessed them with a happy marriage of 67 years.
In the early 60’s, they moved from PA to MD and he began a long and distinguished career as a Communications Supervisor with the US Dept of State, working in high clearance positions with dignitaries throughout many decades of public service.
Jim enjoyed photography, hunting, fishing, biking, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and Bible study. An active mind and body, he was often on the move and frequently engaged in storied and stimulating conversation. At the age of 47 years old, he came to know Jesus as his Savior.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, their children, Donna Gansel of Charles Town, Diana “Lynn” Gansel, of Ranson, Jim and Sue Gansel of Lovettsville, VA. Also surviving and well-loved, his grandchildren, AJ Gansel, Kelley Gansel (Carlos) and Holly Gansel (Wilmar) and his great-great grandson, Tyler; his brother Fred Gansel (Pudge) of Charles Town, WV and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dear sister, Kay Shaw. Family meant everything to Jim and he enjoyed many special gatherings celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, holidays or just another day to eat good food, visit and be with friends and family.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 6-8 PM at Fellowship Bible Church, 160 Daniel Road, Shenandoah Junction, WV, 25442. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 2 PM at the church. Interment will immediately follow at Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg, and a fellowship meal will follow for all family and friends afterward at Fellowship Bible Church.
