Dr. Louis “Lou” Scharff III passed away peacefully at his home on July 12, 2024. Lou was born on April 3, 1933 in Augusta, Georgia. He was raised in Savannah with his younger brother David (of blessed memory) by their mother Ruth Epstein Scharff. He graduated from Savannah High School, followed by two years at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He transferred for his final two years to the University of Georgia, where he completed his undergraduate pre-med studies. While at UGA, Lou met the love of his life Dorothy Ann Lipsitz. Also, while at UGA, Lou was a cheerleader, thus beginning his long and passionate support of the Georgia Bulldogs. Following graduation in 1955, Lou attended the Medical College of Georgia. He graduated MCG in 1959.
In 1961, Lou began a 27-year career at Gracewood State School and Hospital. He always showed great compassion and empathy for his patients. These qualities continued as Lou transitioned next to a 23-year second career in the Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Unit of the Charlie Norwood VA in Augusta, GA.
Lou was a talented athlete. He played football in high school. He cheered in college and loved playing tennis with brother and his buddies. He also competed over the years for various recreation league softball teams.

Lou was the ultimate multi-tasker. When he was not running around Augusta attending events for three sons or Dot’s theater work, he devoted precious time to the community.
