Mary Massie Williams was born Jan. 8, 1932 in Benton Mississippi as the youngest daughter and one of twelve children to Tom and Patsy (Tate) Wilks. There were many stories from her and the siblings that moved from Benton to Lexington. This move was one among the lessons she learned about working hard and fulfilling blessings God will award. At an early age, she accepted Jesus at Sweet Home Baptist Church in Lexington, MS. Growing up, she enjoyed a happy childhood in a large and loving family while working the farm and obtaining her education at Saint Industrial School in Lexington, MS. Because she was such a small child, an uncle blessed her with the lasting nickname of Seabird.
In 1950 Mary followed her siblings north to eventually marry George Williams Jr. (also from Lexington) in Chicago, IL. They relocated to Cleveland, OH in 1952 to start a family with the birth of their first of four children. On January 20, 1952, Mary joined East Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member and active participant in the legendary Group 17.
Mary was a very loving and very hands-on Mother guiding their children to adulthood before entering the workforce at the former Richman Brothers Company, a men’s clothing manufacturer where over the next 24 years she rose through the ranks to become a Supervisor of the Seamstress Sewing department.
Mary M. Williams Obituary
Mary was the same hands-on Grandmother, Great-grandmother and Great-Great-grandmother! She loved, loved, loved her grands and they loved her!
After Mary and George had both retired, they relocated to Marietta, GA in 1993 where they joined Wheat Street Baptist Church. Right away she became an active member of The Ladies Who Usher.
In retirement, she volunteered to serve with Meals On Wheels for 18 years and became a very strong and consistent bowler with her beloved ladies team. Mary was very active in the community where she lived, loved and was loved. She participated in many of the daily activities which included Rummikub, Phase 10, Bid Whist, Dominoes, making costume jewelry and more. Mary’s lifestyle in retirement is a model for us all!
