Judith Lynn Escott of Marietta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024, with close friends at her side. Judy was born in Port Chester, New York on October 14, 1946 to Robert and Sally Escott. At age 7, Judy was bedridden for 2 years due to a rare condition called Perthes disease. The support of her family, teachers, classmates and surrounding community resulted in Judy being the first student in the U.S. to receive remote learning via radio telephone. When she was completely free of Perthes, she successfully completed physical therapy, as she had to learn to walk again.
Upon graduating from Port Chester Senior High School, Judy earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, West Virginia. After teaching second grade for a year in Hollywood, Florida, her passion to help children led her to pursue a Masters in Speech Pathology from the University of Georgia, obtaining her degree in 1971. She began her career as an elementary school speech therapist in Greenville, South Carolina but settled in Georgia in 1973 where she was employed by the Fulton County School System until she retired in 2001.
Judy took great pride in the home she purchased in 1987. Gardening soon became one of her favorite pastimes which earned her the very first “yard of the month” award for her neighborhood. Judy was also an avid reader and enjoyed book-swapping with friends. Her favorite things included M&M’s, Diet Coke, dark chocolate and a good cheese pizza. But most of all she enjoyed making connections with people, and spending time with friends and neighbors on her porch.
Judy is survived by her loving brother Lawrence (Larry) Escott and many close friends and neighbors. A special thanks to all of those friends, neighbors, healthcare workers and caregivers who helped Judy in her final years. An informal gathering of family and friends will be held in late June at the McRee home. Donations can be made in memory of Judy to The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews at www.ifcj.org.
