John Ralph Scheve Jr.

John R Scheve, Jr., age 71, of Marietta, GA passed away on March 18, 2018. He was born on May 27, 1946 in Waukegan, Illinois where he grew up. His future in sales began at an early age as a paper boy delivering papers for the Waukegan News Sun where he won several awards including the Waukegan News Sun “Newspaper Carrier Salesman Champion” award in 1959. This award also included a trip to New York City where he got to see Dave Garroway host the Today Show. John was an accomplished wrestler for Waukegan Township High School and hiked at Philmont Scout Ranch with his Boy Scout Troop.

After serving in the Air Force, John graduated from Kenosha Technical Institute in Wisconsin and then pursued a career in sales with Jockey International, which took him South to Jacksonville, FL where he and Judy met. After a stop in Charlotte, NC, John and his family moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1979. In the 1990’s John began a second career at Emory University where he developed their very successful campus wide recycling program.

As his sons took up the game of soccer in 1980, John was drawn into the sport - first as a coach, then as a referee and finally as President of East Cobb Soccer League where he partnered with local schools to build much needed soccer fields in Cobb County. John helped build Canterbury Park and opened an indoor soccer facility in Marietta. Friendships and relationships forged on the fields lasted a lifetime.

John is survived by his wife, Judy; his sons, Chris and Jason; grandsons, Chase and Joseph; his sister, Susan Vece and her husband Jack, his brother Tom and his wife Lisa, and his brother Mike and his wife Jody along with many nieces, nephews and their children. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Visitation will occur at H. M. Patterson & Son, at 1157 Old Canton Road in Marietta, GA from 5:00 to 8:00 on April 5, 2018. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church at 3401 Lower Roswell Road, in Marietta, GA on April 6, 2018 at 3pm followed by a reception at the church.
