Carolyn Ann (Carol, Momma, & Granny) Schreck of Tamarac, Florida, peacefully passed away in her home surrounded by family on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at the young age of 77. Carolyn was born to Louis and Evelyn DeFelice in Morristown, New Jersey on November 14, 1943. She lived a long, beautiful life, was a faithful servant to our dear Lord, and devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary.
Carol is survived by Paul Curtis Schreck, her loving husband of 58 years; her four children: Paul Schreck Jr., Cristine & Daryl (Dawkins), Lisa (Sandell), and Catherine & Timothy (Brucker) of Fort Lauderdale; grandchildren: Curtis (Kelsea), Christopher, & Caroline Schreck, Katherine LeVance & Jordan, Mike, Virginia & Leslie Dawkins, Joseph Schreck & Lauren Sandell, Isabella, Timothy Jr. & Austin Brucker; great grandchildren: Gavin, Aubrey, Michelle, Emily, Addison, & Cora Mae (who is on the way); her sister Marie “Toni” Brock of Belton, and brother James “Jimmy” (Tina) of Chapin, both of South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by both parents, brother Dr. Louis J. DeFelice of Richmond, Virginia, and sister Patricia (Stanley) Mazurkiewicz of Davie, Florida.
Carol moved with her family as a child to Hollywood, Florida. She graduated from McArthur High School class of 1961, where she met, and shortly thereafter married the love of her life, Paul on November 24, 1962, and moved across Broward County to the northwest Fort Lauderdale home they would occupy for 38 years. She studied nursing at Lindsey Hopkins Technical College and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. However, she chose a life fulfilled by family and raising her four children to be self-reliant, respectful, and, most importantly, loving, caring Christ-like people. Years later with an empty nest, Carol expressed her love for children in serving as a preschool teacher for 13 years at Discovery Pre-School in Coconut Creek, FL. She also volunteered and shared her faith teaching religious education for years, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. As her large family continued to grow, she inherited the name “Granny” from her beloved, late mother, Evelyn. She was an awesome cook, loved her kitchen, and prepared family sit-down meals every night. She sacrificed to send all four children to Catholic school grades K-12, attended Sunday mass each week as a family, and taught her grandchildren to pray. She loved watching movies, playing penny slots at the casino, chatting on the phone, watching Florida Gators & Miami Dolphin football, taking family vacations, and playing solitaire on her tablet. Granny appreciated the simple things in life and never complained, not even about the pandemic. Everyone was welcomed to the Schreck home. She was always cheerful and quick to recall the good times we shared. She sang silly songs, danced- even in her wheelchair, and never missed a chance to laugh about something. Above all, there was nothing she cherished more than togetherness with family and friends during special events like birthdays, holidays, weddings, baptisms, graduations, or any other opportunities to socialize.
Catholic mass will be celebrated by The Reverend Father Jerry Morris, close family friend, on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 12:30pm, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven church in North Lauderdale. Immediately following, Carolyn will be laid to her final resting place at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the merciful staff of Fresenius Kidney Care Tamarac Kidney Center, the City of Tamarac Transportation Services, and Vitas Healthcare.
