Don was born in 1951 in Jackson Heights, NY, the son of Donald Sr. and Maureen O’Connell. He grew up in Centereach, NY where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. He coached football at Stony Brook University and then played football at University of West Virginia.
Don held a bachelor’s degree in education and earned four master’s degrees as well. He was a lifelong learner and avid reader. Don spent his 31-year teaching career in the Longwood Central School District on Long Island in both elementary education and driver’s ed. He was also a supporter of Longwood sports and spent many years as score keeper for the girls’ basketball team. Always the adventurer, he spent some time as a union iron worker, power washer, and tutor.
Don’s life changed when he married the love of his life, Judy in 1993. He was a devoted husband and best friend. Together they built a wonderful life that included family, travel, many dog and cats, and lots of fun. Don was a true family man, and a friend to all who knew him. His kindness was a gift he shared freely, and that legacy is a part of all of us. Don was also a man of great faith as expressed through his involvement as an usher and a fourth degree Knight at San Marco Catholic Church. When Don and Judy moved to Marco Island, they quickly became part of a cherished community. Don played softball on Marco (having played in NY for over 15 years) and was a standout player and coach. Although they were far from relatives, they found new loving family in their community.
Don is survived by his mother, Maureen O’Connell, beloved wife Judy, stepdaughter Kristine Stevenson (Christopher), grandchildren, Mason Horn and Sarah Horn, his sister Donna Sabbia (Rick), nephew Chris Sabbia (Taryn) and nieces Shannon Race (TJ), and Melissa Wolfe (Jake). He was loved by his great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to count.
The family would like to thank the community for the support received during Don’s illness and especially the doctors and nurses at NCH-Baker during his final days.
The funeral mass will be held at San Marco Catholic Church, Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00am, lunch to follow in the parish hall. Donations may be made in Don’s name to St. Matthews House, Gulf Coast Little League, Humane Society of Naples or your charity of choice.
