I graduated Wyoming high school with Clayton. He was a friendly, caring classmate. We both ended up retiring from  law enforcement careers in SW Ohio.

Clay and I graduated in 1979 from Wyoming High School (Cincinnati) Ohio.  He was always a great class member, and stand up man. I thank him for his service to law enforcement.

Classic example of don’t judge a book by its cover. I was very blessed to have the conversations I’ve had with him. I still remember our first conversation like it was yesterday. I’m not sure if I called myself a “Idiot or something  like it”, his response will never be forgotten. He would sometimes give me a little jab about Ohio State beating my Hurricanes for the National Championship. He loved his Buckeyes as I love my Hurricanes. To Lisa and all of his children, family and friends, he will truly be missed. 

My sincere condolences go out to the family, friends and members of the Marco Island Police Department.  My prayers to the Marco Island Fire Department and medical personnel involved.  
I met Clayton on several occasions.  We shared stories of our police experiences.  Clayton struck me as a kind, caring and dedicated law enforcement officer.  He spoke of his family with love in his heart.  
He left this world too soon, but a better place.  May you Rest In Peace.  I believe he will be an angel watching over all of you.  

Laurie and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Clayton's passing.  We worked together at STPD for close to 20 years, and Clayton was  always viewed as a "go to guy" by his supervisors and peers.  He was one of the most tactically sound officer's I knew, and he had the ability to communicate with people no matter what the situation.  Everyone has a "Clayton story".  Safe to say,  he provided more laughter and comedy to his co-workers than he ever knew...but could switch it off and be the ultimate team player and handle the most serious situations, which is how he will always be remembered. 
To Lisa and the family, God bless and know you are all in our hearts and prayers...God speed Clay..and job well done...

He was the Best.  A true friend.  Marco Island lost a ray of sunshine for us.  You will always be my favorite Buckeye.  Rest Easy my Friend.

It was with great honor to have known such a outstanding Police Officer, supervisor, friend and coach. Clayton,  always had your back no matter what department you worked for.  Clayton was more than a brother in blue he is the lyrics in the song " Coach "  by Kenny   Chesney  simply put a "Great guy"  I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers.

I had the privilege to serve with Clayton on the Hamilton County Police regional SWAT team.  When I joined the team as SWAT Administrator I immediately learned that Clayton was going to be my "Alvin" and I say that in a very affectionate way.  Clayton loved to play pranks and joke around and he always had that impish grin.  He and his two other amigos Shaef and Burt could always be counted on for some light hearted humor.  However when there was a call out Clayton was all business, excellent in SWAT tactics, a great team member and a mentor to all.  Through the years I grew extremely fond of Clayton and know how sorely he will be missed.  The respect he earned will never fade nor will that infectious smile.  Rest in peace, son. 

Larger than life, a cop's cop, a true friend. Sincere condolences on the loss of a great man. His tremendous spirit will live on. God bless.

I would simply leave Clayton with these wise words from ancient fraternal wisdom:

The Creator, in His infinite wisdom, has removed our Brother from the cares and troubles of this earthly life. Let us who survive him be yet more strongly cemented by the ties of Brotherly love.

I did not know Lt. Smith but I have had the pleasure of getting to know his youngest son, Zachary, as a student in my classroom. Your husband must have been an amazing man based on what I have seen in Zack. Prayers to you all for peace. Holding you all in the Light. 

We met Clayton and Lisa, our neighbors, a few years ago when we bought our vacation home in Marco. Every visit Clayton and Lisa welcomed us back with a friendly warm greeting and Clayton generously watched over our home while we were away. 

During Hurricane Irma, despite all he had to do during this crisis, Clayton sent us updates and pictures to put us at ease. In the aftermath he helped us, in our absence, coordinate the repair to our vacation home. 

He was a very caring and generous man and we will miss him. Our sincere condolences to Lisa and family.

I met Clayton at  Shoemaker Ambulance in Cincinnati. He was a young man just  getting started.  One couldn't help but like Clay Smith. His infectious smile and laugh was enough to make you forget your last patient.  My prayers for peace and comfort for the family...

"Clayton B" lived larger than life, was a friend to many and, without reservation, was "a man with a plan".  Clay was the "little brother" that I never had.  We spent many hours on the golf course together (oh, how proud he was of his Budweiser golf bag back then), many good times together in the "hunting woods" (Clay remember the time we backed Julie's  brand new Land Cruiser into the Cypress Oak in SC?) and we shared a common bond.  I hurt as we all do as a result of his passing, but I promise that he will never be forgotten and shall live on through each of us. 

About 7 years ago we met Lt Smith on the beach.  Our son Björn collected  police items and he was so kind to give him so. He also gave him a tour through the station and a friendship was born. Every year when we came back to  Marco Island it was a joy to see him again.  We will truly, truly miss him. We want to give our condolences to his familie and friends. Lisa, Pam and I are so sorry for Clayton's passing;  he was a super guy , father, husband and friend.   We loved knowing all of you and will miss him greatly.   Clayton is also a super role model for his kids and they will make him proud.. Sincerely, Pam and Tim Clune 

Clayton drove 5 hours with Buzz and Smitty to see my son after a terrible accident. When he met us at the hospital he apologized that he could only stay 10 minutes because he had to get back to Marco for his shift. He looked at me and said it’s important for Josh to know how important he is to us and my boys need to know that when things go bad you show up. I’ll never forget those words. Show up. 
We lost a man on honor. 
We are heart broken for your family.
