Tom was born on May 13, 1950, in Meriden, CT the son of the late Walter (Whitey) Francis and Jean Horn Carroll. Tom is survived by Linda M. Carroll, his beloved wife of 36 years, and his loving children Scott T. Carroll and his wife Lindsay of Falls Church, VA, Jennifer L. Carne and her husband Jason of Sterling, VA, Sarah Greklek and her husband John of Clifton Park, NY. Tom was also the cherished grandfather of Garret and Grace Greklek, brother to the late James Carroll and his wife Cindy of Honeoye Falls, NY, Susan Hassett and her husband John of Marblehead, MA, and Margeret Thrasher and her husband James of Foxboro, MA. Tom is also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends and family whom he loved dearly.
Tom grew up in Fayetteville, NY. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Norwich University. He was an exceptional football and basketball player in college and an Olympic qualifying Bobsled racer. Tom’s career has included work as a high school math teacher, various entrepreneurial endeavors, and most notably, his 35-year career as a regional Sales Manager for American Cast Iron Pipe Company as a fire hydrant and valve salesman.
Tom has been a resident of Marblehead for over 40 years. During his time in Marblehead, he grew a love of the ocean and quickly became an avid sailor. He raced for over 10 years and won the coveted Beringer Cup Overnight race in 1985. Tom was an active member of the community serving on the Water and Sewer Board for many years, coaching Marblehead Little League and Youth Basketball. Recently, Tom has been refereeing high school track events and volunteering for SPUR and the Goldthwait Reservation.
Tom’s favorite times were spent telling stories and sharing laughs with friends, watching his favorite Boston sports teams, playing golf, enjoying his children and grandchildren’s sporting and dance events, and his annual trip to Cook’s by the Ocean in Wellfleet, Cape Cod.
Tom will be fondly remembered and loved by all whose paths he crossed in his 74 years.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Old North Church, located at 35 Washington Street in Marblehead, MA.
