MARBLEHEAD – Mary Lyman (Osgood) Malcolm, of Salem, formerly of Marblehead, passed away on August 13th at the age of 97 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Snowdon Malcolm with whom she shared 51 years of marriage.
Born in Salem on January 9, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Stuart Osgood and Katharine Smith Osgood.
Mary was raised in Marblehead, attended Marblehead Schools and graduated from Rogers Hall School in Lowell, MA. She attended St. Lawrence University for 2 years and graduated from Garland Junior College in Boston. After her marriage in 1950, she and her husband established their home in Marblehead and raised four children. She was a devoted mother and wife and her life revolved around her family.
Mary was a member of the Old North Church in Marblehead for 66 years. She enjoyed tennis, golf and gardening. She also loved cooking for large family gatherings. She was a proud, long time member of the Busy Bee Society, one of the 3 sewing circles still active today. One of Mary’s special gifts was being a caring and dedicated friend to many. In retirement Mary and Tom were fortunate enough to spend many winters in the Florida sunshine at their Naples home.
She will be deeply missed by her children: Thomas S. Malcolm, Jr. of Salem, Stuart O. Malcolm of Peabody, John L. Malcolm and his wife Annette of Crystal River, Florida and Nancy L. Malcolm of Yarmouthport, MA. Mary was the beloved grandmother of Andrew Malcolm and his wife, Chelsea, Patrick Malcolm and his wife, Caitlin, Scott Malcolm, Daniel Malcolm and Aurora Winkler, Tyler Malcolm and Ariana Malcolm; the adoring great-grandmother of Skylar, Summer, Opal, Ursa and Liam. Mary also leaves behind one treasured sister, Susanna Osgood West of Center Conway, NH a first cousin, Robert W. Osgood III, and cherished nephews and niece, Brian McCormick, Harry McCormick and his wife, Sharon, Richard West and his wife, Lyric and Martha Williamson and her husband, James.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Old North Church, 35 Washington St., Marblehead. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 320 Nevada St #201, Newton, MA 02460 or via www.alz.org.
