Martha Uhlar Brown, a longtime resident of Marblehead, passed away January 5, 2014 at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester, surrounded by her loving family and caring, compassionate staff.
Born on January 3, 1923 at home on the family farm in Pineland, Florida, she was one of eight children growing up during the Great Depression. She was a member of the Greatest Generation, the men and women who took care of business were a selfless, hard working, and patriotic group of citizens. She was the daughter of the late Mike and Katie (Smolley) Uhlar, and wife of the late Alden Marshall Brown.
A graduate of Fort Myers High School class of 1941, she went on to join the Women’s Army Corps in 1943 reaching the rank of sergeant. Martha worked as a Tec 5 Surgical Technician, taking care of wounded soldiers state side at Baxter General Hospital in Spokane, Washington. This experience gave her the desire to become a nurse after her service to her country. Martha was a graduate of Lynn Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1950. She worked in nursing for forty-three years, retiring at the age of sixty-nine. She was a caring nurse, working at Mary A. Alley Hospital, Marblehead, Lynn Hospital and Union Hospital, Lynn.
Martha enjoyed gardening, fishing, bingo and traveling. She was a proud Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Martha cherished the time spent with family especially a very full house of family for joyous, rocus gatherings. She will be missed and remembered with great love.
She is survived by her daughters Marsha and husband Vito Militello, Eleanor and husband Christopher Wilczek, and Sandra and husband Geoffrey King, her grandchildren Frank Militello and wife Colleen, Richard Militello and partner Kimberly Schell, David Militello, Katie Wilczek, Alison Wilczek, Martha Wilczek, Grace King and Joseph King, her great-grandchildren Isabella Militello and Francis Militello. She is also survived by sister-in-law Eleanor E. Brown and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Mary, Helen, Ann and Katie, and brothers John, Joe and Mike.
Her funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home 142 Elm Street, Marblehead. Burial in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8 PM. Please omit flowers. The family prefers donations in her memory be made to the American Stroke Assn., P. O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241.
