William Emmett Loughman

Our father, William E. Loughman, passed away on his own terms October 6, 2024. We have no doubt that our mother welcomed him with open arms and may they have never ending peace!

Bill was born in Mansfield, Ohio March 21, 1935, to Ray and Alice Loughman.

The United States Marine Corps was who our dad was. He enlisted at the age of 18, after graduating from Mansfield Senior High School, and served during the Korean and Vietnam War eras. He instilled in us, his children, the core values of God first, then family, and country. He raised us in many of the Marine Corps' ways. As you can bet, we were tested on if a coin could bounce off our made beds and if our corners were military approved. Above all, he taught us to be respectful and treat others with dignity as this was one of the core values that the Marines instilled in him.

Bill was stationed in Washington DC during his time in the Marine Corps and this is where he met our mother. Peggy was the love of his life, and he would tell anyone and everyone about her. The past eight months without her has been, in his own words, “the toughest place I’ve been in my life”.

Together they made many memories, from their vacations on their BMW motorcycle to traveling all over the world. Bill could be found on the dance floor whenever he could, he loved a good party and was always looking for the next dance. After raising their family in Mansfield, Ohio, and retiring from General Motors, they moved to Cape Coral, Florida, where they spent 18 years living the beach life and making lifetime friends. Bill found his home church in Cape Coral, First United Methodist, and became involved in the Walk to Emmaus (Gulf Coast Walk 42) which was life changing for him.

Honor, courage, and commitment embodied Bill. He was instrumental in the groundbreaking planning of What Goes Around Hospice store and continued to volunteer weekly. Bill was a member of the PM Venus Lodge 152, Marines, Korean War Vets, Amvets Post 126, Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 336, Mansfield Elks 56, American Legion Post 16, and was the Chaplain for many of these organizations.

Bill leaves his legacy to his children, Martin and Tina Loughman, and Vivian and Steven Winters; grandchildren, Tiffany Winters, Stephanie and Bryan Breinich, and Ryan Loughman; great-grandchildren, Zackary Winters, and Carlee and Callee Breinich.

From the Halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli; We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine. Our flag's unfurled to every breeze From dawn to setting sun; We have fought in every clime and place Where we could take a gun; In the snow of far-off Northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes, You will find us always on the job The United States Marines. Here's health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve; In many a strife we've fought for life And never lost our nerve. If the Army and the Navy Ever look on Heaven's scenes, They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines.

Friends may gather Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Wappner Funeral Directors-Mansfield, 98 S. Diamond St. from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Services will be held Friday, October 11, 2024, at First Congregational Church, 640 Millsboro Road, Mansfield at 11:00 AM with Pastor Brad Bunn officiating. Bill will be laid to rest at Mansfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to People Helping People or 33 Forever.
