Bill was born June 21, 1950 in Charleston, WV to Lewis and Nora Smith. He graduated from DuPont High School in 1969 and would then be drafted by the US Army where he would proudly serve as a member of the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. Bill worked as a coal tipple operator for Amherst Madison and in his retirement as a driver for Enterprise where he would forge many friendships. He attended Winfield Baptist Church, a loyal Mountaineer, and a friend to all he met.
Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years Billie, his daughter Carrie, and his son Charles as well as his sister Mary Stewart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jesse Smith.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Huntington VA Medical Center and the CAMC Cancer Center, both Teays Valley and Charleston for all of the care provided to Bill. We would also like to send a special thank you to all the friends and family who traveled along with Bill and us on this journey.
The visitation for family and friends will be from 5pm until 7pm with a short service to follow on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Winfield Baptist Church, 12902 Winfield Rd, Winfield, WV.
Bill was a multi-gallon blood donor so in lieu of flowers the family has requested honoring Bill with a blood (or monetary) donation to the American Red Cross. Bill and family would also like to remind everyone to stay vigilant about your cancer screenings.
