Jim Pettry

Jim Pettry, 84, of Winifrede, WV passed away November 28, 2018 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Jim was born November 8, 1934 at Leewood to the late Burl and Delphia Hayes Pettry. Raised in the town of United, he graduated from East Bank in 1952. While at East Bank, he excelled at both football and baseball. After high school, he attended Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV and West Virginia State College in Institute, WV.

He was proceeded in death by his five brothers Chauncey, Archie, Dempsey, Norris, and Carl as well as his sister Nina. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Patty Nunley Pettry, daughter Vanessa (Harry) Wallace of Scott Depot, son Paul Alan Pettry of South Charleston, two cherished granddaughters Linsey A. Wallace and Molly Jo Wallace of Scott Depot, sister Marie (Charles) Jarrett of Virginia, several nieces and nephews, special cousin Faye Midkiff Burton, and a special nephew Terry Pettry of Cross Lanes.

Jim worked for Carbon Fuel Company for over 30 years, for FMC Ordinance, and part-time for the Charleston Civic Center. He loved to travel whether by land or sea. His favorite trips were visits with his brothers in Houston, TX and Casper, WY as well as trips to Alaska and Mexico. He enjoyed travelling to and watching WVU ballgames, meeting East Bank classmates and friends for breakfast, and bowling with his long-time friends.

Jim took pride in working with friends to support his community. He helped to build a concession stand for the East Bank high school football stadium. He also enjoyed working in the yard, fishing and camping along the Greenbrier, and spending precious time with his family. He most loved going to his granddaughters sporting events. He loved to watch Linsey “eating dirt” as she stole the softball bases, and Molly “smoke the runners” as Jim would say at her track meets. Jim also enjoyed making quilts with his wife and had a passion for cross stitching. His life was rich with family, friends, and fun-filled experiences.

Jim was most proud of his family and loved them dearly. He was kind, gentle, easy to talk to, and was always available for anyone in need.
