Shirley Ann Mays Campbell, 88, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Lloyd Cecil Campbell for 57 years. Born October 1, 1926, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Jerry Thomas Mays and the late Mary “Tena” Cash Mays.
Shirley was a retired nurse’s aide for the Central Virginia Training Center, and she was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher. Shirley also enjoyed cooking and catering for her family and friends. She made over 100 wedding cakes in her time.
In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Lambert; son-in-law, Bud Woody; great grandson, Dylan Bryant; sisters, Kathleen Campbell, Reba Cash and Velma White; and brothers, Kenneth Mays, J.T. Mays, Clayton Mays, David Mays and Hayden Mays.
Shirley is survived by four children, Linda Woody of Madison Heights, Winfred Campbell (Dolores) of Forest, Denise Bryant (Larry) of Madison Heights and Dirk Campbell (Kathy) of Madison Heights; her “other daughter”, Kathy Collins of Madison Heights; son-in-law, Ralph Lambert; four sisters-in-law, Magdalene Mays, Eva Mays, Sallie Mays and Loree Mays; brother-in-law, George Layne (Phyllis); eight grandchildren, Donna Burley (James), Becky Tomlinson (Benny), Mike Bryant (Teresa), Lloyd Paul Bryant (Bridget), Melissa Herrera (Poncho), Samantha Morrissey (Daniel), Adam Bryant (April) and Jordan Campbell; fifteen great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted, 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Amelon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Erbin, Rev. C. Douglas Pillow and Rev. Judy Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery, 650 Thrashers Creek Rd., Amherst, VA 24521.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Monday, January 26, 2015, at Amelon United Methodist Church and at other times at the residence of Linda Woody.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Amelon United Methodist Church or Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Cecilia MacCallum and the staff at the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, the staff at Monelison Family Practice and the nursing staff in the general medical unit at Lynchburg General Hospital for their loving care towards Shirley.
