Matilda Eleanor Henson, affectionately known as "COTTON" joined her Heavenly Father and reunited with the love of her life and devoted husband of 60 years, Freddie . She passed away Thursday evening at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 80 years old.
Cotton was born August 5, 1933 in Big Island, VA to the late Albert and Mattie Thomas. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers: Hazel, Minnie, Margaret, Ernest, and Junior.
Cotton was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She retired from Craddock Terry Shoe Corp after 36 years. She and Freddie were devoted members of Elon Baptist Church and they cherished the love & support of their Church family.
She had a loving and forgiving heart with a passion for family and fellowship that made everyone that walked through her door feel like they were home. She enjoyed her family, reading, crossword puzzles, a good yard sale, playing
Rummy, and trips to Charlestown. She and Freddie enjoyed traveling and fishing with good friends, camping at Nelson Lake, but most of all the family gatherings which took place at their home.
She leaves to cherish her memories her children Deborah "Dee Dee" Henson, Tony Henson (Beth),
Dennis Henson, and Wayne Henson (Faye); four grandchildren: Chris Henson (Laura), Troy Henson(Dawn), Ginny Henson (fiance Myles Ritter), Melissa Henson (boyfriend CJ),two step grandchildren: Jennifer Taylor(Chad), and Amanda Angus (Patrick); four great grandchildren: Emma Sue, Sarah, Carter, and Christian
Henson; two step great grandchildren: Caleb and Bree Taylor. Along with a host of faithful and loving Nieces and Nephews.
Cotton's definition of family knew no boundaries, as she Also leaves a
very special woman she called her "daughter" Mary Woody and devoted nephew Robert Layne who were there with care, support, compassion, and love for her.
She also leaves behind her precious furry "baby" Coco with whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to send a special Thank You to the Nurses and Doctors at Lynchburg General Hospital for their care and compassion during Mom's illness.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday December 10, 2013 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Steve Tyree officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday December 9, 2013 from 6:30-8:30 at
the funeral home and other times at the residence.
