Nancy H. Baran of Madison CT, formerly of Winnetka IL and beloved wife of John S. Baran, passed away on June 26, 2017, her sixty-third wedding anniversary. Nancy was the devoted mother of the late Mariana Baran of Highland Park IL and Cecily Baran of Madison, and beloved grandmother of Juliette and Genevieve Geller, also of Madison. Nancy was the loving daughter of William and Dorothy Harris of Charleston WV and faithful sister to Cynthia Harris Ross of Fort Myers FL. She leaves behind many adoring friends and family members.
Nancy will be remembered for her extraordinary grace, kindness, patience and warmth. She had the unique ability to make everyone she encountered feel welcome, recognized and valued. Nancy was a lifelong lover of animals and a passionate supporter spay/neuter programs and of human, environmental, and women’s rights. She was an avid reader and a founder of a book club on Chicago’s North Shore of which she was a member for over 40 years. She had a great zest for life, was the quintessential hostess, and had a strong artistic talent expressed through interior design and landscaping.
Nancy earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Kentucky and did post-graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she met John, the love of her life. After being a full time mother she resumed her career. Nancy was an editor for many years with Quaker Oats Company, and later with Household International where she wrote and produced complimentary booklets which assisted high school students, adults, and families countrywide in making wise decisions in money management. From 1985 to 1995 Nancy was an active board member of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill Chicago, working to improve conditions in housing and treating the severely mentally ill.
A private memorial service will be held in Chicago in late July, and Nancy’s ashes will be interred at Pemaquid Point, ME.
