Mary Gloria Burrell McCarthy, of Madison, CT, died Tuesday, February 21st in her home peacefully with family by her side. Her husband, Edward “Chip” McCarthy, preceded her in death. He died January 8, 2010.
Gloria was the beloved wife of Edward for over 66 years and dedicated mother of seven children. Family always came first to Gloria. She was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend always preparing the next meal for company, taking pictures of her family, and playing cards.
Gloria completed a nursing program at Muhlenberg Hospital in 1943. She worked as a nurse for many years and became director at PSRO. At the age of 65, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Community Health from Empire State College of New York.
She was born in Flint, Michigan and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey. Gloria and Chip lived most of their married life in Douglaston, NY and then between Lakehurst, NJ and Hypoluxo, FL upon retirement. Gloria made the Hearth at Tuxis Pond in Madison, CT her home for the past seven years.
She is survived by her children, Judy Malin, Richard and Suzanne McCarthy, Robert and Marianne McCarthy, Peter and Kathleen McCarthy, Bob McClure, Sally and Dennis Huysman and Barbara and Kevin Donnellan, 25 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter M. Donna McClure and son-in-law Edward Malin. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Gloria’s family would like to thank her loving caregivers, medical and support team at the Hearth at Tuxis Pond, Dr. Christensen of Shoreline Medical Associates, St. Raphael’s Hospital, Yale New Haven Hospital, Connecticut Hospice, Vitas Healthcare Hospice, Lighthouse Home Healthcare and Nerisa’s Home Care Services.
Calling hours will be held Friday, March 3rd 4-7pm at Swan Funeral Home 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, March 4th at 10:30am. The burial will take place at the South Florida National Veterans Cemetery at 6501 S. State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida at a later date.
