Attorney James J. Grady II, 84, of Madison, CT formerly of Wallingford, CT passed away on January 9, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on July 19, 1938, in New Haven, CT to Anne M. Grady and Attorney George J. Grady.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Claire (Schatzman) Grady. Jim and Claire were married on July 8, 1961, in St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Hamden, CT. He was a devoted father to Debbie and Michael O’Sullivan, Maureen and Robert McDonald, Diane and Anthony Drapos, as well as his son James III and Michelle Grady. He is a cherished “Gump” to his 11 grandchildren Attorney Michael O’Sullivan III, MacGuire O’Sullivan, Malone O’Sullivan, Riley McDonald, Jeremy McDonald, Madelyn McDonald, Macken McDonald, Arianna Drapos, Anthony Drapos, Jimmy Grady IV, and Conor Grady.
Jim graduated from Notre Dame High School of West Haven, CT, LeMoyne College, and in 1961 from the University of Connecticut School of Law. Upon graduation from the University of Connecticut Law School on August 16, 1964, Jim was appointed to the position of Assistant Attorney General. During his career as Assistant Attorney General, Jim served under 6 Attorneys General as Division Head, Department Head, and as Special Counsel to the Attorney General for the state of Connecticut, until his retirement in October 2002.
Among the various activities he was involved in for many years, he enjoyed playing tennis and bridge. Jim loved vacationing on the beach every summer with his wife, children, and grandchildren in Rhode Island. He enjoyed the many family trips and cruises, as well as, traveling with Claire and friends. Jim was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed his favorite pastime of scoring baseball games.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family Friday, January 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at- the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT. His funeral will be celebrated at noon, Saturday, January 14 at St. Margaret Church, 24 Academy Street, Madison. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Wallingford, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances can be made to either the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023, or Notre Dame High School, 1 Notre Dame Way, West Haven, CT 06516, in memory of James Grady II.
