Dr. Tandy Walter Treadwell, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 22, 2022 following an extended illness. Walter was born on October 25, 1932 in Miami, Florida to Tandy W. Treadwell, Sr. and Wilton Pope Treadwell of Miami.
Following graduation from high school, Walter attended Vanderbilt University, graduating with honors from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1955. He did his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, MS. For 7 years, he had a private practice in Huntsville, Alabama but returned to Mississippi School of Medicine to pursue his dream of teaching. He was instrumental in beginning the Family Medicine program in Jackson, MS and was subsequently offered a position at the Medical Center of Central Georgia (now Atrium Navicent). While here, he formed a family practice residency for interns from Mercer University School of Medicine. By 1986, Walter was both Chief of Family Medicine at the Medical Center of Central Georgia and Chairman of Family Practice at Mercer University School of Medicine.
In 2000, Walter retired as Chief of Family Medicine and Professor and Chair Emeritus at MUSM. Under Dr. Treadwell’s leadership, Mercer Medical School became one of the top U.S. medical schools in producing family physicians and accomplishment recognized with the Gold Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents and his former spouse, Jane Treadwell. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Betty Perryman Treadwell of Macon, GA; brother, John Treadwell (Beverly) of Huntsville, TX; sister, Helen Hinds of Coral Gables, FL; children, Rory Treadwell (Nancy) of Madison, MS, Keith Treadwell (Sue) of Brandon, MS; Tandi Pevey (late Jon) of Brandon, MS, David Perryman (Jan) of Houston, TX, and Rhonda Perryman Williams of Macon, GA; grandchildren, Courtney White, Jennifer Davis, Keeton Treadwell, Kevin Williams, Ashley Williams, Cameron Treadwell and Mackenzie Treadwell; great-grandchildren, Brees, Rory Jane, Max and Mackenzie.
Walter was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church and the Inspirit Sunday School Class where he and Betty enjoyed many friendships. The family wishes to thank Carlyle Place for their tender loving care of Walter. A special thank you to Pine Pointe Hospice for their care in the final days. The family also wishes to express thanks for the support of the Alzheimer’s Association of Macon for their support over the years.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Bass Road. Dr. Mark Hudgins will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service and asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Mercer University School of Medicine or Pine Pointe Hospice or Ingleside Baptist Church.
