Paul Roy Odom, 85, died Sunday, August 17, 2014. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, August 20 at 2 p.m. at Vineville Baptist Church. Burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet visitors one hour before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vineville Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 2591 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
Mr. Odom was a lifelong resident of Macon, and the son of the late Paul William Odom and Martha Rainey Odom. He was an honor graduate of Lanier High School, class of 1946. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps before he entered and graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Ceramic Engineering. He had a 37 year career with J. M. Huber Corporation.
Mr. Odom was a member of Vineville Baptist Church where he received the title of Deacon Emeritus in 2013 for his exceptional service as a Deacon for 45 years. He also served as a Sunday School teacher, department director, President of the Taylor Bible class, President of XYZ (Seniors Club), usher since 1999, and Sunday deposit counter for many years.
Mr. Odom was a Scoutmaster of Troop 9, Boy Scouts of America for 23 years, receiving the District Award of Merit in 1975, The Silver Beaver Award for “distinguished service to youth” in 1978, and was designated a James E. West Fellow by the Boys Scouts of America.
Mr. Odom was a member and chaplain of the American Legion, Post 3; a member and past worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge #5 F&AM of Macon, and a 33rd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Red Cross of Constantine.
Mr. Odom was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels for 20 years, delivering meals and serving on the Board of Directors, 3 years as President. He received the Fred A. Manget Award, along with his wife, in 2001 for “outstanding service to Senior Citizens”.
Mr. Odom was a charter member and chaplain of the Detachment 970 Marine Corps League, and a member of the Military Order of Devil Dogs. He received the Marine Corps League Distinguished Citizen Award in 2007.
Mr. Odom was predeceased by a sister, Elinor Odom Lindsey, and an infant son, Paul Clifford Odom. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jackie Long Odom; daughters and sons-in-law, Paula Odom Sparrow (Chip) of Macon; Lucy Odom Smith (Tracy) of Statesboro; grandchildren, David J. Korley, Jr. (Anjel) of Atlanta, Natalie K. McGinty (Josh) of Perry and Dustin H. Terrell of Statesboro; great-grandchildren, Ella Korley and Sebastian and Louie McGinty; and his brother, William F. Odom of Havelock, North Carolina.
