A Celebration of her Life will be held at 12:00 Noon Friday, June 3, 2022 at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Bass Road with visitation following. Interment will be private. The family wishes to thank the kind and loving friends and staff at The Gables for their devotion to their residents. Martha was a devoted fan and participant in live theatre, as an actress, storyteller, director and finally as a mother and grandmother to theatre folks. In lieu of flowers, Martha’s wish was for donations to be made to Macon Little Theatre or the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Martha was the daughter of the late Helen Abercrombie Sapp and was preceded in death by her lifelong sweetheart Franklin Shirah who passed away in 2019. She is survived by her beloved sister Elizabeth Proffitt (Ray) her two children, Sylvia Haynie (Laura Voss) and Robert Shirah (Brenda) of Tennessee; grandchildren, James P. Haynie (Ashlee), Franklin Michael Haynie (Grace Aki) and Rebecca Shirah Miller (Brett Roach) of Macon; three great grandchildren, Madison Miller, Hudson Roach, and Luminara Haynie; a nephew, Tommy Holmes (Debbie); and nieces, Ann Holmes Hulett and Jennifer Gills; multiple great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mrs. Shirah wore many hats in her life, an amazing mother, business owner, radio personality, theatre director, storyteller and friend to many. She and Franklin served for many years as Red Cross Disaster Relief Volunteers, and spent time working with Habitat for Humanity. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Hawkinsville. Together with Franklin, she served as a delegate to the Baptist World Alliance, representing conventions in China, England, Australia, and South America.
