Louis Stout Philhower, Jr. of Macon passed away peacefully at the age of 95. He was a faithful Christian, devoted husband of 68 years, patriarch to a loving family, community leader, successful businessman, wonderful story-teller and friend to all who knew him. Louis' long full life was by his own assessment "GREAT."
Louis was born in 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia, son of Maude Davis Philhower and Louis Stout Philhower, Sr. In his youth he lived in Lynnhaven, Virginia, Iater moving to Williamsburg. He attended Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, Virginia. Graduating in 1949, he was captain of Headquarters Company and a member of Ad Astra Per Asper honorary society. He was co-captain of the 1949 Virginia Military football championship team and captain of the swim team. He was an elite swimmer. Louis enrolled at Clemson college on a football scholarship graduating in 1955 with a BS in Economics. After serving two years in the United States Army, he returned to Clemson and graduated with a MS degree in economics He married Mary Verner Campbell of Clemson, South Carolina in 1957 and moved to Macon, Georgia where he was a representative for the Polio Foundation/March of Dimes. He entered the securities business with Clisby and Company in 1959 and remained a principal in the securities business for sixty years, working for a number of investment companies, including several of his own. His business was a source of tremendous personal satisfaction because of the friends with whom he had the pleasure of working.
A member of First Presbyterian Church, PCA, Louis served as a deacon, elder and trustee. He was a member of the Canterbury SS class. He enjoyed membership in the Macon Exchange Club for many years.
Following the stock market, cheering for the Clemson Tigers and sharing life experiences with his family and friends brought Louis great joy. Louis was a physical fitness enthusiast. He loved running and exercising for his entire life. Bird watching was one of his favorite past times. His wit and witticisms made every conversation memorable, and his humble faith and values live on in everyone he touched. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Mary Verner; Son, Andrew Campbell Philhower (Gabriel Ceballos) of Atlanta; Daughters, Amanda (Bob) Oswald of Savannah and Melissa (Bruce) Jones, Macon, GA; Grandchildren, Laura Kate (Brooks) Mathews; Louis (Rachel) Oswald; Betsy (Christopher) Jones and six great grandchildren, Rhett Samuel Mathews, Molly Kate Mathews, Sophie Melissa Jones, Summer McKenzie Jones, Sally Campbell Jones and Louis Samuel Oswald.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank "Mr. Louis'" wonderful caregivers: Carolyn Waters, Ivy Adjabeng, Bridgitt Clements, Brenda Crayton, Ella Mahone and Vivian McClinton.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Chip Miller officiating. Burial was held prior in Riverside Cemetery.
