John was born on June 11, 1949, to Charles and Milea Faye McKee (Markland) in Peoria, Illinois. He attended Stamford Catholic High School in Stamford, Connecticut. He received a B.S. in Secondary Education from Southern Connecticut State University, where he was the Editor of the Southern Review. Throughout his professional career, he took on many roles, including Owner of John’s Getty, History Teacher at Stamford High School, National Training Supervisor at Electrolux, Owner of J&R Service Center, Scotch Corner, and Midstate Vacuum, and Executive Producer for many multimedia productions. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Known for his unmatched warmth and kindness, he was truly 'one of a kind,' with his playful banter and witty sense of humor revealing his charm. He had a passion for teaching, a love of history, a vivid imagination for writing, and he was a master at storytelling. His family will remember him for his patience, honesty, and uncanny fairness. He instilled in his children the value of their word as their bond, emphasizing its utmost importance. In his daughter Alison's eyes, he was not only her father, but also her best friend, unwavering ally, and most loyal confidant. To his daughter, Fiona, he was a great father, friend, and whose opinion she valued dearly. For each of his grandchildren, he chose to reside on the same street during their early years, actively engaging in their upbringing, providing unwavering support to the entire family, and being the most beloved playmate on the block. Also by unanimous verdict of his grandchildren, he was not just Grandpa, but also a self-proclaimed 'secret agent.'
He is survived by his brothers: Charles Michael (Maggie) McKee of Wyoming, James (Linda) McKee of Florida, and Joseph (Amy) McKee of Florida; daughters: Fiona (Brian) Hall and Alison (Jason Hibberd) Ayotte ; and grandchildren: Duncan (Dallas) Hall , Brianne Hall, Kelsey Hall, Milea Faye Hibberd, and Maccus Hibberd; as well as a cherished extended family of nieces and nephews, by whom he was affectionately referred to as 'Uncle Bear.'

He will be laid to rest at St. John Cemetery, Camp Avenue, Darien, Connecticut.
