John Oliver Leggett Sr.

John Oliver Leggett Sr. (Johnny), 78 of Macon, GA, lost his battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia at his home on July 5, 2021. However, he fought the good fight, kept his faith and finished the race.

He was a loving husband to Lynda Fuller Leggett for 50 years, and a loving father to John Leggett Jr. of Daytona, FL, Lori Neshimka (John) of Millstone, NJ, Jessica Flemming (Josh) of Nevada City, CA. And, he adored his 3 grandchildren, Bobbie Neshimka, Jenna Neshimka, and Jada Flemming.

John is preceded in death by his parents, C.A. Leggett and Marjorie Nowell Leggett, and his brother Chuck Leggett. He is survived by two brothers Wayne Leggett (Glenda) of Macon, GA and Michael Leggett (Terry) of Macon, GA, and his sister Jennifer Brannen (Joseph) of Winder, GA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

As a young man he was a member of Tattnall Square Baptist Church. From 1980 - 1995 he and Lynda were members of Tabernacle Baptist Church where they taught 5th and 6th graders for many years. They became members of Ingleside Baptist Church from 1995 - 2021.

John served in the Navy from 1960-1964. His naval ship, the USS Gyatt, was part of a fleet in the Cuban Missile Crises that faced the potential confrontation between the US and Soviet Union, leaving him with a hearing disability due to weeks of shooting- practice preparing for possible war. After the navy, he was employed as a printer for Southern Press before starting his own construction framing crew. Soon afterwards he began his own business, Leggett Construction Company, which he continued through 2018 when he retired.

He participated in amateur boxing competitions with Golden Gloves of America. Some of his adult hobbies were hunting and fishing; and he was an advanced open water scuba diver. At age 65 he decided he wanted to learn music and the violin. He loved to do his practicing in front of people until his illness kept him from playing. John loved the mountains of North Georgia and the memories of his childhood vacations at Tybee Island. He was also a collector of knives and would often buy one from a restaurant if he liked it. Then he enjoyed giving them away.

He loved people and always had a funny quip for everyone. He will be remembered for his warm, endearing sense of humor which drew people to him.

Family will receive friends on Monday, July 12, 2021, from 10 until 11 o'clock, in the Fellowship Hall of Ingleside Baptist Church. John's Celebration of Life will begin at 11 o'clock, in the Sanctuary of Ingleside Baptist Church, led by Dr. Mark Hudgins. In lieu of flowers, please make any contributions to your favorite charity.
