Eleanor Adams Lane, supportive friend, faithful church teacher, devoted family member and community leader died Sunday July 31, 2022. Her death will register as a great loss in the hearts of many who knew and loved her. Born on August 29, 1936, she completed high school in Atlanta, GA, and matriculated at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After years as a community leader during which she was recognized by Wesleyan and other community organizations for outstanding contributions, she returned to school, earning a Masters of Family Studies from Mercer University in 1992. She was a licensed family therapist at the Family Counseling Center and at Crossroads Counseling Center from 1993 until her retirement in 2020.
Mrs. Lane’s numerous community activities include serving as a member, Sunday School teacher, and circle leader at Vineville United Methodist Church. She was a member and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Georgia Women of Achievement and a member of Career Women’s Network. She served Wesleyan College as a member of the Board of Trustees and also was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Industrial Home and the Macon Food Bank. She was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Macon Magazine. She served as President of the Macon Council on World Affairs 1969, the League of Women Voters 1971-72, and in 1976 was a member of Leadership Georgia. Other worthy organizations have benefitted from her advocacy, leadership, and interest.
Early in her residence in Macon, Eleanor was active in support of government services, participating in 1975 on the City-County Consolidation Committee, as a member of the Policy and Citizens Committee for the Water Quality Planning Program, and as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the State Housing Element. Locally, she was a member of the Substandard Housing Committee reporting to Macon City Council from 1974-76 and as Chairman of the Macon Area Transportation Study.
Recognition for her contributions to her college and community came as she was named in 2002 as a Woman of Achievement by the Career Women’s Network, in 1979 by the Macon Bar Association with the Liberty Bell Award, and in 1980 with the Alumnae Award for Distinguished Achievement by Wesleyan College. She was honored in 2008 with the Valeria McCullough Murphey Award by Wesleyan College and in 2016 as the first recipient of the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award by Wesleyan.
Eleanor is predeceased by her parents, Marian Jones Adams and John Oliver Adams, her first husband, Howard Irving Scott, Junior, her second husband, William Anderson Lane, and her daughter, Margaret Marian Scott; she is survived by her son, Howard Irving Scott, III, of Macon, and her granddaughter, Sidney Katherine Lane of East McKeesport, PA. Also surviving her are several well-loved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at the Pierce Chapel at Wesleyan College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5. Family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Vineville United Methodist Church, Wesleyan College, or the charity of the donor’s choice will be welcome.
