Charles Hinton Weston, Sr. 78, went peacefully to heaven to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 4, 2024. A Celebration of his Life will be held Friday, August 9, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Ingleside Baptist Church, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon GA 31204. Dr. Mark Hudgins and Rev. Joe McDaniel will officiate. The family will greet friends after the service. Burial will be private for the family at Macon Memorial Park.
Born February 23, 1946 in Americus, GA, Charles was the son of Hamilton and Ruth Weston and the younger brother of Bud. He grew up in Talbotton, GA and was an outstanding student and athlete at Talbot County High School, earning a full basketball scholarship to Mercer University. It was at Mercer where he met Gwen Johnston who became the love of his life. They married in March of 1969 when Gwen had completed her degree and Charles was a freshman at Walter F. George School of Law. After graduation Charles served three months active duty at Fort Gordon in Augusta. He continued to serve in active reserves of the U.S. Army for six years.
Charles began his law career in Macon in 1972, delighted to be hired as a prosecutor for the Macon Judicial Circuit. For 28 years Charles prosecuted major crimes of violence serving as First Assistant D.A. and then as District Attorney. Leaving his position as District Attorney in 2000, Charles was appointed District Attorney Emeritus and spent two years working across the state as a special prosecutor. In 2002 he began teaching Criminal Justice with a pre-law focus in the College of Liberal Arts of Mercer University and had a dual appointment to teach in Mercer’s adult program, Penfield College. This second career was a rich time of teaching and mentoring students. One of his favorite parts of teaching was “Trials of the Century Lecture Series” in which he presented one university-wide lecture every semester for most of his 14 years at Mercer (2002-2015). He was one of the most beloved teachers at Mercer – teaching out of his 30 years of prosecution experience. Many of his students went on to attend law school and others were so impacted that they chose other justice arena careers.
Charles loved coaching his children in rec ball, both softball and basketball and continued to help them during their high school years. He also coached teams at Freedom Park and Unionville. When his own children were older, he held free summer shooting clinics (“Charlie’s Angels”) where he taught girls how to shoot a boy’s jump shot. For most of his life Charles was in some form of gospel ministry-from leading services at the Rescue Mission, teaching, leading small groups, serving as an elder in several churches and leading an intercessory prayer group for several years. His life has been his Lord, his family, and his careers. Charles and Gwen had a long season of being home bound but they loved to participate in on-line worship services from their Ingleside Baptist Church. Charles was never depressed during his years of declining health always trusting God to provide what was needed.
Charles is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gwen, his son Charles H. (Michelle) Weston, Jr. of Augusta, GA, and his daughter Leslie W. (Trey) Gavin of Forsyth. Grandchildren: Hinton and Harleigh Weston, Augusta and Eliza and Jack Gavin, Forsyth. Sister-in-law: Lynda Neal Weston of Athens, brothers and sisters-in-law Eddie and Nancy Bess Johnston of Rome, and David and Mary Beth Johnston of Forsyth, and a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved brother, Bud, and his parents: Hamilton P. and Ruth McNeal Weston.
The family is extremely grateful to Sonya Robinson who provided exceptional care for Charles for the last five months of his life.
