Mrs. Hughes was born October 9, 1939, in Jamestown, New York to the late Kenneth R Peterson and Bertha C Smith Peterson. On May 7, 1966, she was married to the love of her life, Ed Hughes.
In her early years she was a graduate of Orra-Jean School of Beauty Culture and was a Licensed Cosmetologist in Pennsylvania. She also was an associate for the American Greeting Card Company with thirty-five years of service and where she received numerous service excellence awards. She was affectionately known as "The Card Lady" by many in the Jamestown area.
Mrs. Hughes faith was important to her, she was a member of the New Apostolic Church for over seventy years. She loved arranging flowers for the alter, singing in the choir and helping in any way she could.
In 2005, she and Ed, retired to Georgia. Never one to sit still, she realized how much she loved to dance and they began taking lessons, finding many new friends that she spoke of often. She was also a member of the Fenton Historical Society and the Viking Lodge #65, both of Jamestown, New York. Mrs Hughes loved to travel and tend to her gardens. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law: Marlene and Butch Heglund; sister-in-law: Greta Peterson and a stepfather: Paul Corcoran.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her husband of nearly sixty years: Raymond Edward Hughes; a son: Daniel Hughes (Laura) of Macon; daughter: Wendy Devlin of Westfield, New York; brother: Kenneth Peterson of Florida and a beloved cousin: Kitty of Tennessee. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and their families, whom she cherished.
In lieu of flowers, family requests that you keep her spirit alive by planting some pretty flowers, dancing to your favorite tune or better yet, do a kindness for someone that needs one, without fanfare, as Carol would have done.
