Laura L. Akerman, age 74, of Rockford, Illinois passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 29, 2024. She was born on December 26, 1949 to Albert & Julia (Beyette) Moss in Oregon, IL. After graduating high school, she joined the workforce. She worked in human resources for many years before retiring from Swedish American Cardiac Care in 2015. To keep herself busy during retirement, Laura enjoyed her job providing samples at Sam’s Club. She married Kent Akerman on February 29, 1980, and spent the next 44 years raising their family together.
Laura loved to go shopping and enjoyed having lunch with her many friends. She loved her cats, laughing at funny pet videos, and making friends with the backyard squirrel. The most important thing to Laura was her family. She was incredibly proud of them and would take every opportunity to make sure they knew they were loved. From (occasionally embarrassing) posts to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries to “Just thinking about you” cards in the mail, Laura never missed an opportunity to tell you she loved you. But the loves of her life were her grandchildren. She’d take them out to eat and attend every sporting event. She kept everyone’s favorite snacks in one of her enormous purses. She even helped teach one of her grandsons to drive. Her compassion, dedication to the things she was passionate about, and love for anyone who needed it will live on in those whose lives she touched. May her memory be a blessing to all those who knew her.
Laura will be greatly missed by her husband, Kent Akerman; her children, Dusty Booker, Sandra (Benito) Jass, Christine (Michael) McCollum, Larry (Vickie) Akerman & James Akerman; her grandchildren Luke, Abbey, Max, Zachary, Dehlia, Darien, Benito & Frank; her great-grandchildren Clayton, Penelope & Otto; her siblings Martha Gertman & William “Bill” Beyette; and her best friend Pam. Laura is preceded in death by her parents, Albert & Julia Moss; and her brother Edward Moss.
A visitation for Laura will be held on Monday, July 8 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd., Machesney Park, IL 61115. A funeral service will be held the following day on Tuesday, July 9 at 10 AM at Sunset Funeral Home, followed by her interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
