Dwight E. Tanner, Jr. passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Alden Alma-Nelson Manor after a short battle with cancer. He was born August 22, 1925 in Mason City, IA, the son of Dwight E. and Welma (Kuhl) Tanner. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the European Theater. Formerly married to Eileen (Mattingly) Tanner, who preceded him in death. He worked for many years in the heavy equipment trades in the Greater Rockford Area. Dwight was very involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life-long member of Clifford E. Johnson Post 9759 of Loves Park, IL. He served in every elected office at the post, district and state levels. Dwight is survived by his children Sandy Smith of Loves Park, Steven (Sharon) Tanner of Mission Viejo, CA and Mitchell (Judy) Tanner of Orange, CA; grandchildren Randy, Michelle, Kris, Lisa, Amy and Joshua; great-grandchildren Zachary, Austin, Lauryn, Brady, Alex, Maci, Madison, Jackson, Kaitlyn and Spencer; sisters Irene (Richard) Falconer, Marjorie (Wilmer) Jones, Carol (Donald) Andrews, Marion (Jefferys) Wiener and Lucille (David) Wilcox, and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Jim Smith. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Alden Alma-Nelson and Family Centered Hospice for the excellent care, kindness and compassion shown to Dwight and his family.
