As a young man, Don proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine from 1983-1987. In his later years he was employed by Titan Tires as a maintenance supervisor. While Don was strong-willed and stubborn at times, he was also wise, strong, kind, funny and generous. He believed if you gave respect, you would get respect, and he was always willing to share his knowledge with those around him.
In his spare time, Don enjoyed golfing, reading, bowling, cheering on the Patriots and watching his sister compete in Special Olympics events. But his favorite pastime of all was being a grandpa.
His life had a profound impact on everyone he knew. He will be deeply missed, but the love he showed and the memories he left behind will live on in the hearts of us all.
Don is survived by his loving wife and soulmate Jan Gwaltney, parents Ronald “Leon” and Emma Gwaltney, brother Ron (Sue) Gwaltney, sister Debbie Gwaltney, his children: Brooke (Brian) Yount, Gage (Sharon) Gwaltney, Lyndzie Kaeding, Corey Olsen, Kaitlyn (Dean) Rocha and his beloved grandkids: Charlie & Cole Yount, Lincoln & Asher Gwaltney, Adalyn & Cody Olsen, Marley, Zion & Damian Rocha and many nieces, nephews, dear family members and friends.
A visitation for Donald will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, 8800 North Alpine Road, Machesney Park, Illinois 61115, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, funeral expense donations are greatly appreciated.
