It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Freitas on September 28, 2024, at the age of 66. She passed suddenly at St Vincent hospital in Portland, Oregon after suffering a massive stroke.
Barb was born October 5, 1957 to Betty and Jerry Dykes in Lancaster, California. Her family moved to Kenmore, WA when she was a toddler.
Her childhood was filled with love and joy from a “very” large family she cherished all her life.
When Barb was in high school she moved with her parents to Beaverton, Oregon. While living in Oregon, she met and married her ex-husband Larry Lutz, gave birth to her son Chris, and made lifetime friends she loved dearly.
After a change of circumstances, Barb and Chris moved back to Washington. She found a job she loved, working as a dispatcher at one of Seattle’s busiest cargo terminals. Never intimidated by her male dominated work environment, she took pleasure in ordering the longshoreman and truck drivers around. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Jim Freitas.
Barb and Jim’s life was filled with friends and family. Their home in Shoreline welcomed anyone looking for love, humor, and good food. When Jim was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Barb assumed the role as sole caregiver. Together, Barb and Jim battled the debilitating effects of MS. With kindness, generosity, and an abundance of love, Barb cared for Jim until he passed.
After the passing of Jim and her beloved mother, the following years were very difficult and tumultuous for her.
Barb struggled to find peace in her life. While our hearts mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing she’s resting in peace with her loved ones that passed before her.
