Martin Thomas Hines

He was a lifelong resident of Lynn, born to the late Francis Hines and Mary (Hayward) Hines-Clark, and step-son of the late George F. Clark.

Marty was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, class of 1966. He received his degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University in 1971. He was an ROTC Cadet and went on to graduate as a Second Lieutenant. He later furthered his education and earned his MBA from Suffolk University. After he completed his education, Marty enlisted in the Army Reserve, he was a member of the 1169th Transportation Unit. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War (1990-1991) with the 803rd Medical Group. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1996 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

In 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Diane (Karuzis) with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. They spent a year stationed in Anchorage, Alaska before returning home to Lynn in 1974 where they settled and raised their family. Marty worked for the City of Lynn from 1974-1977, and then went on to become a Budget Officer for the USDA for 44 years until he retired on July 17,2021.

He was an avid collector of antique toy trains, in particular, the American Flyer. This hobby started years ago when he recreated the American Flyer set he built as a child with his father. He had an eye for antique toys and enjoyed the hunt of finding a treasure. He also enjoyed gardening, and was known for his tomatoes. Among all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Diane, Marty leaves behind his son, Martin T. Hines II and his wife Melissa of Danvers, his daughters, Holly Ciarcia and her husband John of Beverly, and Melissa Morelli and her husband Stephen of Haverhill. Five grandchildren, Lily and Nora Hines, John and Julia Ciarcia, and Kyle Morelli. His sister, Millie Jenkins of Candia, NH, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother to the late Francis “Peter” Hines, Anne Coates, and step-brother George Clark Jr. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Georgie.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Beverly Hospital’s Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit for the compassionate care they provided Marty.

Family and friends are invited to Marty’s visitation on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. His Funeral Mass will be Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Sacred Heart Church, 571 Boston Street Lynn at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
