Walter F. Freeman

Walter F. Freeman, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 22, 2011 with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Louise Jennings Freeman for sixty-two years.

Born December 21, 1923 in Lynchburg, Walter was the son of the late James A. Freeman, Sr. and the late Katie Elizabeth Doss Freeman and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Freeman and James A. Freeman, Jr. and a son-in-law, Jeffrey Macbeth. Walter was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service. He served his country proudly during World War II as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator stationed in Italy and completed more than fifty combat missions over Europe. Walter also served in the Virginia National Guard and retired from the U.S. Army as a Major.

Walter enjoyed many good rounds of golf and bowling with friends over the years. He was an avid sports fan, especially when it involved watching his daughters! He never stopped learning new things.

In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by two daughters, Lynn Macbeth of Lynchburg and Ann Marie Myers and her husband, Steve of Forest. Also surviving are a grandson, Mike Macbeth and his wife, Mikala of Tucson, AZ; a granddaughter, Jessie Ros and family in Brandon, FL and many other dear loving family members and friends.

The family wishes to express deep and sincere appreciation to Centra Hospice, especially Alice and Katie, for their wonderful care of Walter during this last month and for their love and compassion.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2011 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Paul Boothby officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

A service will also be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, to be announced.
