He was born in Keysville on February 4, 1943, son of the late Robert Lee Ashley, Sr. and the late Mary Viola Martin Ashley.
Robert was a member of Mentow Masonic Lodge #180. He was an Army veteran and was the retired owner of Lynchburg Dry Wall Company. In his spare time, he enjoyed tractor pulls and drag racing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Esther B. Ashley; a sister, Mary Ashley Matthews and a son in law, Robert Hart.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Becky Hart, Debbie Wooten (Vernon), Pamela Springer (Shane) and Robert Lee Ashley, III (Laura); brothers, Richard Houston Ashley (Charlotte), Garland Ashley (Ada) and Roy Ashley (Thelma) as well as eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank his caregiver, Carolyn Herald, for all the love, care, and compassion that she showed their father as well as thanking Centra Hospice Team for all their care and support.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 11:50 am on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA where a Celebration of Life will be held at 12 noon with Rev. James Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at Nicopolis Cemetery, 1158 Nicopolis Drive, Bedford, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
