June Stephens Eggleston passed away on May 3rd peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with Dementia. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior and the Love of her life, Roy James Eggleston Sr., her husband of 72 years. Born on August 28, 1930 in Lynchburg, VA, she was the daughter of the late Edward Monroe Stephens and the late Lera McNeely Stephens. She worked at J.P. Bell for a few years before starting a family. She stayed home to raise her four children and many, many neighborhood children. There was always a yard full of children, and different little feet at the dinner table. She became “Mama June” to many. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church from the time she was 10 years old until they closed their doors in 2005. She then attended Covenant Presbyterian Church until they closed in 2017. She was president of The Woman of The Church at Bethesda for many years, she was also church Historian and was an Elder of the church in later years. She taught Sunday school, and was a choir member along with many other church activities. June was a “people person” and a caregiver for most of her life. She took care of her mother who passed at a young age, and took care of an aunt, sister and her father.
She is survived by two sons, Douglas W. Eggleston of Rustburg, and Roy “Jaye” Eggleston Jr. and wife Cathy of Forest, two daughters, Dawn E. Fesler and husband John, and Wanda E. Hamlet and husband Ronnie all of Lynchburg. She had seven grandchildren, Heather H. Alto and husband Chris, Tiffany Novilla and husband Gabe, Matthew Eggleston and wife Melissa, Derek Hamlet and wife Karen, Heidi Haney and husband Chase, Holly Detwiler and husband Dave, Tara Fesler and fiancée Meg. She had 14 great grandchildren, Autumn Litchford, Hunter Alto, Ryleigh Alto, Zoe Novilla, Evan Novilla, Bennett Eggleston, Harper Eggleston, Clara Eggleston, Eden Eggleston, Tristan Hamlet, Sylas Haney, Colby Haney, Sam Detwiler, and Dexter Detwiler. She leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends that are too numerous to list, but each held a special place in her heart. Family meant everything to June, and she will be sadly missed by all.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of Guggenheimer nursing home and the hospice staff for the loving care that they provided to “June Bug” during her last years.
