Joseph Earl Slocum, 76, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at his residence. He is the husband of Barbara Bates Slocum. Born in Port Chester, NY, he is the son of the late Earl Ellsworth Slocum and Mary Tiriolo Slocum. Joe was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and was the retired Director of Development of the Lynchburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority. He was an active volunteer serving as past President of the Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club, Director of Lynchburg Citizens Police Academy, past President of Rebuilding Together Lynchburg and as past Board Chairman of Virginia Bicycle Motocross Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Justin Slocum, Carmela Moon (Joshua), Wendie Warren (Brian) and Deborah Moore (David); grandchildren, Matthew Moore, Kelsie Warren, Sarah Slocum, Charli Warren, Mitchell Moore, Emerson Moon, Greyson Moon and Lochlan Moon and two sisters, Luella Ferraro and Suzanne Schafner (Bruce). He was a father figure and a mentor to Larry I. Spencer. A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 2 p.m. with Father Jim Dorson officiating. A reception will follow after the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 Roundelay Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502.
