Frances Buckley Calhoun, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at the age of 89. A woman of many talents and a kind spirit, Frances left an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew her.
Born on November 8, 1935, Frances had a lifelong passion for art, which she expressed beautifully through quilting. Her exquisite creations earned national and international recognition, with her work featured in prominent magazines and exhibitions. Beyond her artistry, Frances was a trailblazer, becoming the first woman to achieve a high administrative position within the USDA.
Frances had a deep love for history, dedicating her time to the Historical Society of Lynchburg, where she delighted in giving tours at the historic Point of Honor. Her home, which was registered with the Historical Society, stood as a testament to her commitment to preserving the past. She welcomed visitors with genuine Southern hospitality, opening her doors to share the beauty and history she so lovingly maintained.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Frances cherished her family above all. She found joy in cooking, gardening, and tending to her vibrant array of flowers. Her pets, both dogs and cats, were a constant source of comfort and companionship.
Frances is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Kelly Buckley and Sophie Combs Buckley; her husband of 69 years, Herman H. Calhoun; and her brother, Erroll Allen Buckley. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Calhoun (Aubrey O. Friedhoff III); granddaughter, Tiffany Jo Waddel; nephew, Marcus Alan Buckley (Ellen); step-granddaughters, Debbie Friedhoff and Renee Kee (Rusty Kee); five step-great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Kayla, Destiny, Journey, and Harmony; and dear friends Polly Garbee, Susanne Roth, Sharon McBride, Karen and Dan Murphy, and Ann Marie Caylor, as well as her many quilting friends at The Patches and Pieces Quilt Club.
No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society in Frances’ memory.
Arrangements are being handled by Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
Frances’ legacy of love, kindness, and creativity will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
