Funeral services for John Louis Massey, 81 years old of Zavalla, Texas will be conducted at 2PM on Saturday, October 5, 2024 in Gipson Funeral Home Chapel. John was baptized of Pentecostal faith young by his father. Rev. Cary Modisette will officiate and eulogy will be given by Delton Smith with burial in the Zavalla Cemetery.
He was a life-long resident of Angelina County. He graduated from Zavalla High School. He was a great basketball player. He worked at the Lufkin paper mill for the 32 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Master Mason Angelina Lodges #1263. He was a loving, dedicated, caring husband, father, and PaPa. His joys in life were camping and carrying the grandkids on vacation. You might catch him enjoying car races or watching sports. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and Astros. John strived to do his best and provide for his family. He loved his family dearly and relished their closeness and warmth of love.
Deceased were his father, Pastor Jasper (Jap) Massey; mother, Elsie Courtney Massey; 2 brothers, Garland Massey, and Mike Massey; 4 sisters, Elizabeth Rose Myers, Orelle Sherman, Betty Mingee, and Opal Totten; and special-in-laws, Johnnie and Dot Cryer.
Survivors are wife of 60 years, Johnnie Sue Cryer Massey; son, John Elton (Son Boy) Massey and wife, Veronica Ann of Lufkin, Texas; granddaughters, Alisha Nicole Massey of Lufkin, Kaylyn Elisabeth Massey of Kennesaw, Georgia; grandson, William Reagon (Willy) Massey of Lufkin, Texas; brother-in-law, Kenny Myers; a number of special nieces and nephews; and special friends, Charles Ray Craven, Burlon Jones, Doug Day, Delton Smith, Cliff Layton, Doug Moses, Tony Coleman.
Pallbearers will be Benjamin Cryer, Charles Ray Craven, and William Reagon Massey.
Honorary Pallbearers will be friends of the Lufkin paper mill.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
