When I Think of my childhood with Cheryl, I always remember the Christmases on Fox Hall Lane.  The cousins in this photo are the ones I saw and spent the most time with and termed them the ‘Fives.’  Aunt Henrietta wound remind me there was five years between Keith and Kitty, Kitty and Cheryl and Cheryl and myself. During summertime visit s to Zeagler Street in Killeen, Aunt Dorothy would do the same in the opposite way. Keith was 15 years older than me, with Kitty ten years older and Cheryl five years older.  Truly can’t say if that started my fondness for Math in school but I also, can’t tell you how many times Cheryl had to put up with this little cousin following her every move.  She taught me how to use ‘dipping-do’ if I wanted curls to stay more than a day, how music other than gospel could make you move just by listening to it, that it’s okay to have more clothes in your closet than you’d ever wear much less wear out plus the tags don’t have to come off the day they come home, how the neighborhood pool was not the place to get her hair wet, that practicing Chopin on the organ was not quite the same much less on her accordion, throwing a ball was much different and for me easier than throwing your voice while not moving your lips as she would demonstrate with a freckled face dummy on her lap, plus many other important facts no other cousin took the time to teach me.  Just a few more…when giving directions while driving to my house avoid the newly built loop as she was only sixteen and the old route from Grandma’s and Grandpa’s was much safer for us to travel because she wouldn’t have had to drive so fast, that I didn’t have to always remind her which house she use to live in while I rode shotgun back to my grandparents, the correct procedure to duck down in the floorboard so no one would know I was in the car as we passed some of her old classmates’ houses, and how omission is not lying and not to tell everyone where all we had been on our drive.

Cheryl and Richard are probably the only cousins that I have stayed close to through the years and grateful for their continuous contact with my parents. As the five years difference that separated us, I learned how to enjoy Rock and Roll, curl my hair,  love milk shakes, pool time and drives to anywhere we could to escape our moms busy chatter which now I miss greatly.  Was honored to be their Junior Bridesmaid with the royal purple gown and it’s beautiful satin bow in the back. Certainly wished we had spent more time together though the years and thankful to have both as cousins and friends.  In my heart I know Cheryl communicates still to her family and know she showed her love in many ways more than words even though hard struggles health wise, she still could smile. So blessed to have the positive influence in our lives.

Cheryl was a dear co-educator of mine in CCISD. She was an encouraging, kind soul and brought many smiles to my days. She was devoted to students being counseled well and cared to guide them in the best directions. May God bless her spirit with eternal peace. 

I had the honor of working for Richard Crawford and remember how his eyes ignited with love when speaking of his wife and the soft smile as he glanced at her photo. My heart hearts for the pain of his loss of Cheryl and that of all her well loved family.  Deepest condolences to all.

Cheryl was also survived by her nephew, James Owen, his wife Kelly, and daughters Heather Owen, Delaney Owen and Brooke Owen and Niece Kim Owen.


She is preceded in death by her son, Michael Eugene Crawford; parents, Eugene and Dorothy Conard; and sister, Kathryn Owen.
