Services for Bill F. Poplin, Sr., 85, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Stephen Lantis officiating. Entombment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Poplin was born August 15, 1927 in Shelby County, Texas, the son of the late Elma Lee (Taylor) and William G. Poplin, Sr. He passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 in a local hospice facility.
Mr. Poplin was an officer with the Department of Public Safety for 38 years, retiring in 1986. He was a volunteer with Memorial Hospital for many years, and was active with The American Red Cross through their summer water safety program. He was a coach and mentor with the Youth League Baseball. He supported his community by officiating football games with many high school and collegiate teams. Mr. Poplin was a member of First Christian Church. He served his country with the United States Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his son, Bill F. Poplin, Jr., of Crockett; son and son-in-law, Dennis Poplin and Kevin O'Neill of Washington, D.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Mark Condron of Lufkin; close family friend, Earl Krieger of Crockett; granddaughter, Tiffani Brantner and husband Jeff; grandson, Clint Haygood; great-grandson, Cullen Brantner; sister, Paula Stanley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold "Sonny" and Geneva Newsom; sister-in-law, Jerre Newsom; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Poplin was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Newsom Poplin; and brother, W. G. Poplin, Jr.
Pallbearers will be Ernest Rowe, Kenneth Hadnot, Tom Selman, Jack Watson, Clint Haygood and Jeff Brantner.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Glenn, Dr. Abraham Cheriyan, Dr. Ravinder Bachireddy, Dr. Royce Read, Ray Carswell and Ray Polk.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Poplin's memory may be made to the Lufkin Memorial Hospital Volunteer Scholarship Program, P. O. Box 1447, Lufkin, Texas 75902.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
