Roy was a great scholar, mentor, colleague, friend and leader of the Rawls College of Business. Prior to teaching at Rawls College, he served in the Survey Research Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Roy received his Ph.D. in Marketing with supporting fields in econometrics, Quantitative analysis and statistics at the University of Arkansas in 1979. He began teaching at the TTU College of Business Administration in 1982 and retired from his position of Professor of Marketing in 2020. During his tenure, Roy taught a wide range of courses including advanced quantitative courses for doctoral students, served as Area Coordinator of the Marketing Department from 1993-1996 and as Dean of the College of Business Administration from 1997-2001. Roy’s research in the areas of marketing strategy and research methods, particularly structural equation modeling and measurement, were published in many prestigious journals of the course of his career. Roy was recognized with the college’s Outstanding Researcher Award, Outstanding Teacher Award, the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and several more. He was named the James L. Johnson Chair of Business Administration, a position he held until his retirement.
Roy married Carol Clarkson in Aviano, Italy in 1994 and together they have four children. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Barrick; his loving wife, Carol Howell; daughters: Laura Howell, Emily Narbaez (Jerry), Vanessa Braband (Chris) and Sarah Wood; three grandchildren: Brandon Lary (Alley), Rachel Smith and Quinnley Braband, and a host of other family members and friends.
He will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.
His ashes will be scattered later at the Duhan Ranch near Flomot, TX where he loved to hunt with family and friends.
