Marguerite Probasco

She was born May 29, 1916 in Eldorado, OK to Ovid Bennett and Willie Mae Hanks Power, the fifth of six children. An en-trepreneur, her father owned and operated a vaudeville house where Marguerite took a shine to the stage and won a gold medal for her singing.

In 1924, she moved with her family to Lubbock, TX, where her father owned a cotton gin and built the retail properties on Broadway St. at College (University) Ave. The family lived in a home on Ave. X at the corner of Main St.

She attended the Central Ward Elementary School, Carroll Thompson Jr. High and was among the first group of students to attend the new Lubbock High School building in 1931. She graduated in 1933. Mrs. Probasco also attended Texas Technological College from 1933 – 1935. She graduated from secretarial school in 1936.

Marguerite married Denzil Vann Probasco, a 1936 Texas Tech graduate in textile engineering from Floydada, TX., on July 19, 1937 at First Baptist Church in Nashville, TN. Among other places, the couple lived in Philadelphia, PA and West Point, GA before moving after WWII to Long Island, NY and then Ridgewood, NJ where they lived for more than 20 years.

Mrs. Probasco also lived in Petersburg, VA and Kankakee, IL before returning with her husband and family to Lubbock in 1964. She was active in the Women’s Club, a gardening club, and was a long-time member of Second Baptist Church where she and her husband taught the Young Marrieds class for several years.

With her husband, she owned and operated Perrins, Inc. a custom drapery and home décor manufacturing plant with retail stores in Lubbock, Amarillo and Midland/Odessa. After the sale of that company she worked part-time at The Cottage Antiques for several years.

Her last years were spent at Carillon in Lubbock, where she enjoyed the company of friends, activities and outings.

Marguerite loved decorating, gardening, reading, antiques and embroidery. She also loved to dance. She was a patron of the arts in New York and in Lubbock.

She is survived by her four children: Michael (Joyce) Probasco, Arlington, TX; Sally Probasco (Topf Wells), Madison, WI; Tobyn Leigh (Gary Miracle), Galesburg, IL; and Jeffrey Probasco, Portland, OR. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Sheri Skains, Scott Probasco, Christian Tallman, Matthew Tallman, Leigh Peters, Summer House, Cole Cantleberry, Tyler Cantleberry, Anna Probasco and Michaela Probasco. She had nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Probasco was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock on Tues., April 26 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Interment is planned at Resthaven at 10 a.m. Weds., April 27 at 10 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at 11 am at Neil Chapel located on the Carillon campus at 1717 Norfolk Avenue. Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church in Lubbock.
