Throughout her childhood she moved several times while her father followed the pipeline with Shell. She worked for First Baptist in Wichita Falls where she married James Calvin Stewart on July 5, 1946. While there she was able to share her beautiful soprano voice in an acapella quartet.
Calvin started school at Texas Tech in Lubbock. When the Korean Conflict broke out, the family had to move to San Diego to be close to Calvin while he was in the Navy. Once the conflict was over, they moved back to Lubbock where Ina May made him promise they would not leave again. She then set to making Lubbock her forever home for her and her family.
Ina May was a well-read, intelligent, savvy businesswoman. While in Lubbock, she held several positions in a time when it was more difficult for a woman working outside the home. She helped pave the way for many businesswomen to come. She worked as a secretary at the VA, at KDAV, where she met Buddy Holly and members of the Grand Ole Opry, and at Second Baptist. In 1973, she and Calvin established The Cottage, West Texas’ Most Exciting Antique and Gift Shop in Lubbock. It was a shop full of wonderment and fun which remained for 30 years as a staple in the city’s retail market.
Ina May was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX. She loved everyone and was known and loved by all. She opened her home to several people over the years. She hosted foreign exchange students attending college, family members needing assistance, parties for her friends, campfire group, hobby club, and a weekly spirituality group. She loved to travel and was part of an unofficial Mickey Mouse Travel Club with her friends. She also shared this love of travel with her children and grandchildren.
