Elizabeth Ann Hope

Elizabeth Ann (Dobyns) Hope, 91, of Lubbock (formerly of Brownfield), passed away peacefully on March 4, 2022. She was born on January 30, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Richard Lawson Dobyns and Mary Lucile Dobyns. She grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1949. Ann graduated from Baylor University in 1953 with a degree in education and Bible and a minor in music.

At Baylor she met her husband, Sherman Allen Hope, and they were married for almost 69 years. The couple spent their first four years of married life in Oklahoma City while he completed his medical school training. They then lived in Colorado and Florida during his service in the U.S. Air Force.

After a year in Pryor, Oklahoma, Ann and Sherman settled in Brownfield, TX, where they lived for 56 years raising their large family as he practiced medicine in the community. The family was active at First Baptist Church, Brownfield, where Ann taught both children’s groups and adult classes over the years and was active in Women’s Missionary Union. In addition to church responsibilities, Ann was also involved in other community activities including the American Association of University Women; and she volunteered tirelessly for schools, sports, scouts, and anywhere else her family was involved.

Ann’s greatest joy was her family. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she relished hosting family events in her home and attending all the significant activities in which her family participated. She warmly welcomed her children’s friends as well, and the Hope home was a frequent gathering place for kids (and adults) of all ages.

Ann and Sherman enjoyed traveling, and they exposed their family to many delightful destinations throughout the country. As the children grew older, they visited many countries throughout the entire world (including Antarctica). One of Ann’s hobbies was reading, and she was always anxious to learn more about the world and the lives of interesting people.

In 2017 Ann and Sherman moved from Brownfield to Carillon Senior Living Center in Lubbock.

Ann is survived by her husband, Dr. Sherman Hope of Lubbock; her sister, Mary Ashley Evans of Grass Valley, CA; her children, Mary Ruth Keller (Kenton) of Dallas, Allen Hope (Rose) of Riverside, CA, Judy Whisenant (Danny) of Levelland, TX; Sue Ann Kimberling of Levelland, TX, Richard Hope (Karla) of Lubbock, and Jimmy Hope (Melissa) of Brownfield, TX. She is also survived by her fifteen grandchildren, her twenty-one great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Timmy.

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2022, in Neil Chapel, Carillon Senior Living Center, 1717 Norfolk Ave. Lubbock, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Buckner International for work with children and families in West Texas.
