Charles E.”Buddy” Furgerson was welcomed by our Heavenly Father into the eternal Kingdom on January 6, 2023 at the age of 84. Buddy was born in Cooper, Texas on February 14, 1938 to the late Lorraine and Adoral “Red” Furgerson.
Buddy grew up in Austin, Texas where he graduated from McCallum High School and later attended the University of Texas where he was a basketball manager. Buddy eventually graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1965 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
On February 6, 1960 Buddy married Beth Van Horn in Odessa, Texas. Buddy and Beth moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1963 where he went to work for, and later became, President and CEO of Gage Van Horn & Associates. In 2001 he became the co-owner and co-founder of GVH Distribution. Buddy was a member of the Lubbock Southwest Rotary Club, the Red Raider Club, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, First United Methodist Church, Lubbock Country Club, and was on the Downtown Revitalization Committee.
Buddy’s favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, supporting the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and spending time with family and friends. Affectionately called “Dodaddy” by his two grandchildren, he took his role as the man who would do anything for his family very seriously. Buddy was a kind, gentle, and wickedly funny man who will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beth; his two daughters, Paige Sawyer and husband Ricky, Cindy Schmidt and husband Joe; two grandchildren, Jackson and Kinley Schmidt; brother-in-law, Dr. Gage Van Horn and wife Virginia; his niece and nephew, Margaret and Michael Van Horn; and a host of friends.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Buddy’s life on Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 4:30pm – 6:30pm at the Lubbock Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Louise Van Horn Scholarship at the College of Education at Texas Tech (P.O. Box 41071, Lubbock, TX, 79409) or Lubbock Meals on Wheels.
