Wilma Jones Ewing

She was preceded in death by her parents Edgar O. and Viola Lukenbill Jones; her husband of 51 years, Ben F. Ewing, III; a brother, Eddie; a sister, Doris Mullendore; and a son-in-law, Tom Brownstead.

She was a 1940 graduate of Louisville Girls High School. She was an avid sportswoman who not only excelled in golf and swimming but was a Kentucky Junior Tennis champion who traveled the country to play other junior teams through sponsorship on the Louisville Wightman Cup team. Highlighting one of her proudest moments was playing at the US Open Women’s National Singles Championship held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in the late 1930’s.

Wilma was a charter member of Christ Church United Methodist from Broadway Methodist Church and an active member of the UMW’s. While in Ashland, she attended First United Methodist Church. Her proudest accomplishments were being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother (GeeGee).

She is survived by her children, Barbara Morse (Wayne) of Kingwood, TX, Jacque Brownstead of Ashland, KY, Ben F. Ewing, IV (Wendy) of Charlestown, IN, Sallie Wagner (Bob) of Madison, AL, and Jim Ewing (Dora) of Rockwood, TN; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was a devoted homemaker for her family. She was all about family, friends, church, competition of any type, and enjoyed watching UK Wildcats basketball. She enjoyed her monthly bridge games with her girlfriends and the monthly gathering of the Lunch Bunch.

A Celebration of Wilma’s Life will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 27, 2012 in the Chapel of Arch L. Heady and Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd., with Dr. Rebecca Heid officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Tuesday and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of customary expressions, contributions may be made to Christ Church United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church of Ashland, KY or to one’s favorite charity.
