He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, A retired railroad engineer of 38 years for Norfolk-Southern and was the owner operator of Bill Howard Cleaners for thirty five years. He was a founding member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, and also attended Hikes Point Christian Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus (fourth degree), a performer with the Young Hearts Theatre Group, Rat Racers of Louisville, served Meals on Wheels in Shively for 25 years, volunteered as an Airport Ambassador. He also enjoyed roller skating, bike riding walking, traveling and was an avid golfer.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Ryan) Howard, son-in-law, Jeffrey Lykins, and his late wife, Joan Kennedy Howard.
He is survived by his wife; Jan Howard, children, Janet (Michael) Millay, Paul (Gemma) Howard and Mary Beth Lykins, stepdaughter, Jennifer (Bill) Denny, grandchildren, Kennedy Millay, Krammer Millay, Josh Howard, Jacob Howard, Justin Howard, Brandon Lykins, Stephen Denny and Rachel Denny. He’s also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins.
A funeral service to celebrate Bill’s life will be conducted at 10am on Thursday, September 29, 2016 in the chapel of Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Guests are invited to attend a visitation from 4-8pm on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 and after 9am the day of the funeral.
